1. Change the Oil and Oil Filter on Schedule
Compressor oil degrades over time, losing its viscosity and lubricating properties. Running a compressor with degraded oil is the leading cause of airend failures which are the most expensive repairs possible. Follow the manufacturer's recommended service intervals, and in dusty or hot KZN conditions, consider more frequent changes.
2. Replace Air Filters Before They Block
A blocked air inlet filter starves the compressor of air, forcing it to work harder and run hotter. This accelerates wear on every internal component. Check filters monthly and replace annually at minimum or more often in dusty environments like woodworking shops or quarries.
3. Drain Condensate from the Air Receiver Daily
Hot compressed air contains water vapour which condenses in the receiver tank. This water causes tank corrosion from the inside which can lead to catastrophic tank failure. Drain the receiver every day, or install an automatic electronic drain.
4. Keep the Coolers Clean
Oil coolers and aftercoolers clogged with dust and debris cause the compressor to run hot, triggering thermal shutdown and accelerating wear. Clean coolers with compressed air monthly, or use a coil cleaner quarterly.
5. Listen and Watch for Early Warning Signs
Unusual noises, increased running time, higher oil consumption, or more frequent thermal trips are all early warning signs of developing problems. Catching issues early before they become failures is the difference between a minor service cost and a major overhaul bill.
